Overview

This site is a gateway to tools and technologies that enable companies to effectively manage manufacturing quality.

Our Mission

Our mission is to provide access to the latest in knowledge-based technologies to help engineers and managers attain the highest levels of quality in the workplace.

What We Offer

We developed this site and a knowledge-base powered by the Coach Decision Support System (TM) to provide a root cause analysis of quality events. This knowledge is based on published guidelines and in consultation with quality experts.

The report issued by the program provides details on the quality event, classifies the event and documents direct causal factors as part of a Root Cause Analysis or RCA. It also provides information on corrective, preventative, and communication actions that can be taken to improve the production and business processes.

How you should use this System

This on-line system is designed for one-time or multiple use. By providing a valid email address, you will be able to log into the system at any time to review previous reports or obtain a new quality assessment.

Get on the path to improved quality now!
Cut manufacturing quality costs and save time.

"A Knowledge-based System to Improve the Quality and Efficiency of Titanium Melting," Expert Systems with Applications, Volume 24 2003.

This paper outlines the application of a knowledge-based system to assist the furnace production staff in diagnosing and correcting Electron Beam (EB) guns, which are used to melt titanium. The characteristics of a titanium melting facility, its business objectives, and the responsibilities of its furnace operators are reviewed. Alternative solutions to the problem of accurately troubleshooting EB gun failures are discussed. The chosen solution (i.e., the knowledge-based system) was in alignment with the company's on-going Continuous Improvement efforts designed to improve operational efficiencies and thus was met with support. Next, we discuss the costs and benefits associated with the system. A description of the system architecture is provided along with a review of the knowledge acquisition process. Development, testing and implementation of the system is reviewed. Finally, the impacts of the system on the company are discussed.

"FailSafe: Supporting Product Quality with Knowledge Based Systems," in Expert Systems with Applications," Volume 16 1999.

This article describes the design, development, implementation and impact of a knowledge-based system used in Quality Assurance in the food industry. The knowledge base of the system was developed by a non-programmer in a high level production rule language. The introduction of the system led to improved decision-making at the plant level and improved reporting to meet internal and external quality requirements. The system also contributed to team based learning. The system is likely to save one plant over US$ 100,000 due to decreased consumer complaints. Keywords: Quality assurance; Root cause analysis; Knowledge management; Decision support system
